Decision Point for the Citizens of Europe:

'Brexit' Referendum and Spanish Parliamentary Elections

On June 23, citizens of the United Kingdom will participate in the European Union membership referendum. Only three days later, on June 26, a general election will be held in Spain after six months of political deadlock and the failure to form a government. Both events will have significant implications for the future of the European Union, a union already under duress due to the Greek debt crisis and mass migration. In addition, populist and nationalist parties have been surging in a number of EU member countries - from Germany to Austria, Hungary to Poland, and France to the United Kingdom. Will Europeans seek unity or chose division? The US-Italy Global Affairs Forum would like to invite you to a panel discussion on such issues.

Donald Jensen

Donald Jensen is a fellow at the Center for Transatlantic Relations. From 2002-2008 he was Director of Research and Analysis at Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, where he oversaw that international news organization’s analytical publications, including the daily RFE/RL Newsline. He also managed the organization’s extensive program of conferences and briefings. Dr. Jensen writes extensively on Russian domestic politics, foreign policy, security and energy issues, especially the politics of Russian business. Dr. Jensen received his B.A. from Columbia University and Master’s and Ph.D. in government from Harvard.

Renzo Cianfanelli

US-Italy Global Affairs Forum

Renzo Cianfanelli is an award-winning foreign correspondent and columnist, holding a DrJur in Law and Monetary Economics (Rome, La Sapienza), currently based at the United Nations in New York. Soon after graduation, he left his native Italy for London, with a 4-year contract as a broadcaster with the BBC. He then joined RCS Corriere della Sera, Italy’s main media group, for which he served in a variety of international posts over nearly 30 years. These included London and US Bureau Chief, Moscow special correspondent, and world correspondent-at-large. As a war correspondent, he covered most recent conflicts from Bosnia to Iraq. He also writes a monthly column in Longitude, Italy’s journal in English on World Affairs.

He has appeared on countless radio and TV shows in America and Europe. He is the recipient of the William A. Rusher Award for Journalistic Excellence and was named Journalist of the Year by the Conservative Political Action Conference in 2002.

Juncal Fernández-Garayzábal

Institute for the Study of International Migrations (ISIM), Georgetown University

Juncal Fernández-Garayzábal is a PhD candidate at Comillas Pontifical University (Madrid, Spain), and Visiting Researcher at Georgetown University’s Institute for the Study of International Migrations (ISIM). As MSc in International Cooperation for Development and Politics and Democracy in the EU, her fields of study comprehend conflicts, forced migrations, organized crime and security. More specifically, she is focusing on human trafficking among refugee population, and the relation of this phenomenon with international terrorism. Her research has developed through collaboration in projects with different research institutes, both in Spain and at international level, for instance The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies. Moreover, she has combined her academic knowledge with field experiences in different countries, such as Peru and Equatorial Guinea.

White House Chronicle

Llewellyn King is the creator, executive producer and host of “White House Chronicle,” a weekly news and public affairs program, airing nationwide on select PBS and public, educational and government cable access television stations; worldwide on the English-language stations of Voice of America Television. King is also a regular commentator on SiriusXM Satellite Radio's P.O.T.U.S. (Politics of the United States) Channel 124. In addition to broadcasting, King writes a weekly column for the Hearst-New York Times Syndicate.
